Medana Beach, northwest Lombok
★ 4.6(1,820 reviews)
The Oberoi Lombok is the original Oberoi property in Indonesia, set on a private beachfront in Medana on Lombok's northwest coast. Garden pavilions and luxury pool villas range from 6,500,000 IDR to over 25,000,000 IDR per night. It delivers genuine five-star international-chain service and a beautiful low-density beachfront — but you're paying Bali-luxury prices in a location that requires deliberate excursions to see Lombok proper.
# The Oberoi Beach Resort, Lombok: The Established Five-Star
The Oberoi Lombok opened in 1997 as the first true international-luxury resort on the island, predating the Mandalika development by two decades. Three Oberoi managements and several refurbishments later, it remains the most polished resort experience in Lombok — and the most expensive consistent product on the island.
The Oberoi group is one of two Indian luxury hotel chains (alongside Taj) with a strong reputation for service-driven five-star resorts. Their Lombok property occupies 24 acres of beachfront on Medana, a quiet stretch of the northwest coast about 25 minutes north of Senggigi and 30 minutes south of Bangsal harbour for Gili boats.
The setup is classic Oberoi: low-density buildings, traditional architecture (here Sasak-influenced rather than Mughal), heavily landscaped tropical gardens, and a private beachfront with no public access.
Two main categories. Luxury Pavilions are the entry-level option — large air-conditioned garden rooms with terraces, set in clusters through the property gardens (6,500,000–10,000,000 IDR/night). Luxury Villas are standalone walled compounds with private gardens, plunge pools, and outdoor sitting areas (12,000,000–25,000,000 IDR/night).
For first-time Oberoi guests, the Luxury Pavilions deliver the brand experience without the villa premium. For honeymoons, anniversaries, or family stays where you want full privacy and a private pool, the Villas are worth it. The Royal Villa is a two-bedroom beachfront unit suited to families or special occasions.
Medana is a quiet residential and resort area — not a town. You won't find walkable restaurants, shops, or evening activities outside the resort. From the Oberoi: 30 minutes to Bangsal harbour for Gili ferries, 25 minutes to Senggigi for restaurants and nightlife, 90 minutes to Kuta Lombok for surf and the Mandalika circuit, 90 minutes to Lombok International Airport.
The Oberoi runs private boat charters from the resort beach to any of the Gilis, which avoids the Bangsal harbour transfer entirely. Cost is around 2,500,000 IDR return for a private boat up to 6 guests.
The dining is consistently very good. Lumbung, the main restaurant, runs an Indonesian-Asian menu with proper attention to regional dishes — the rendang and the gado-gado are both excellent. Breakfast is included, served either on the beach terrace or in the main pavilion, and is one of the best resort breakfasts on Lombok. Tokek Bar & Grill is the more casual beachfront option for lunch.
Mains at dinner run 250,000–600,000 IDR — Bali-luxury pricing without nearby cheaper alternatives. Most guests dine in for dinner because the Senggigi drive is 25 minutes and Senggigi's dining isn't notably better than the Oberoi's.
The spa is excellent — properly trained therapists, full menu of regional rituals, treatments run 1,200,000–2,500,000 IDR for 90-minute sessions. The pool is large, free-form, and well-maintained. Tennis courts and a small fitness centre cover the activity bases.
The kids' programme runs during school holidays (June–August, December–January) and is genuinely good — supervised kids' activities, kids' menu, kids' pool. Outside school holidays the kids' club is reduced and primarily on-request.
Some of the older garden pavilions feel slightly dated despite refurbishments — fixtures, mattresses, and some bathroom finishes don't quite match the price tag. The Luxury Villas are notably newer and better maintained. If you're paying Oberoi prices, the villa upgrade often delivers better value than the entry pavilion at the entry price.
Book the Oberoi if you want internationally-recognised five-star service in Lombok and you're willing to pay for it. Book it for honeymoons, anniversaries, family holidays during school breaks, or any trip where you want a self-contained luxury resort base and don't need to be near surf beaches or major attractions.
Skip the Oberoi if budget matters more than chain pedigree (Tugu Lombok at Sire delivers a more distinctive luxury experience for similar money), if you want walkable town vibe, or if your trip centres on Kuta surf and Mandalika — you're 90 minutes north of all of that.
