Senaru, north Lombok (Rinjani trek gateway)
★ 4.7(920 reviews)
Rinjani Lodge is a boutique jungle lodge in Senaru, the northern gateway village for Mount Rinjani treks, with a clifftop infinity pool and views over the Sindang Gile waterfall valley toward the volcano. Rooms run 1,500,000–3,500,000 IDR/night. It is the most photographed pre-trek hotel in Lombok — but you are paying boutique prices in a remote mountain village, and the lodge is a base, not a destination in itself.
# Rinjani Lodge: The Pre-Trek and Post-Trek Boutique
If you have seen any photo of a Lombok hotel with an infinity pool overlooking jungle and a volcano, it is almost certainly Rinjani Lodge. The clifftop pool position above the Sindang Gile waterfall valley with Mount Rinjani as the backdrop is one of the genuinely photogenic Indonesian hotel views, and the lodge has built its identity around it. But the value of staying here isn't only the photo — it is the logistics. Senaru is the northern trek gateway village for Rinjani, and Rinjani Lodge is by a clear margin the best place to base yourself for that trek.
Rinjani Lodge opened in 2014 as a boutique addition to Senaru's otherwise budget-trekker-guesthouse accommodation scene. French-Indonesian ownership, around 14 rooms, designed specifically around the volcano view. The property has been refurbished multiple times — the most recent in 2023 — and the upkeep is visibly better than competitor properties in the village.
Three categories. Standard Bungalows are smaller fan-cooled rooms set back from the pool (1,500,000–2,000,000 IDR/night). Deluxe Bungalows are larger AC bungalows with private terraces — most have valley views (2,000,000–2,800,000 IDR/night). Premium View Bungalows are the front-row units with unobstructed views over the valley to the mountain (2,800,000–3,500,000 IDR/night).
For the experience, the Premium View Bungalows are the right choice — the view is what you came for. Deluxe Bungalows are a fair compromise. Standard Bungalows are functional but you'll spend most of your time at the pool to access the view; for the same money you could stay in a basic Senaru guesthouse and visit Rinjani Lodge for dinner and a pool day.
Specific room request: ask for bungalow numbers 7, 8, 9, 10, or 11 — these are the front-row valley-facing units. The property cannot guarantee specific rooms but will note the request.
Senaru sits at about 600m elevation in the foothills below Rinjani's northern slopes. From Lombok International Airport: 3-hour drive (180,000 IDR by Grab if available, 600,000–800,000 IDR for a private transfer). From Mataram or Senggigi: 2–2.5 hours. From Bangsal harbour (Gili boats): 90 minutes.
The lodge is a 5-minute walk from the Senaru trekking start point and a 15-minute walk down to Sindang Gile waterfall (worth doing if you have a free afternoon — moderate trail, beautiful 40m waterfall). The village itself is small and quiet — a few warungs, a couple of trekking guide offices, a small shop. Don't expect a town centre.
The pool view is the property's defining feature and it lives up to the photographs. Sunrise from the pool deck on a clear morning, with Rinjani's peak catching the first light, is genuinely memorable. Cloud cover is common in afternoons (particularly November–March wet season), so morning is the best time for the view.
Trekking logistics are where Rinjani Lodge earns its money. Most guests are doing or have done the 2D1N or 3D2N Rinjani trek, and the lodge handles arrival and departure smoothly: early breakfasts at 5am for trek starts, late check-outs for guests returning at 4pm dirty and exhausted, hot showers and cold beer waiting. The lodge can also arrange the trek itself through their vetted guide partners — slightly more expensive than booking direct in the village but reliable.
The on-site restaurant is functional rather than special — Indonesian classics (nasi goreng, gado-gado, grilled fish) and basic western dishes (pasta, pizza, burgers). Mains 80,000–160,000 IDR. Breakfast is included and is good. There are basic warungs in Senaru village if you want to venture out, but no destination dining within an hour's drive.
The mountain climate is a real benefit. Senaru sits at 600m so nights are cool (18–22°C) and you can sleep with windows open. Standard fan rooms are perfectly comfortable; AC is optional rather than necessary.
Mosquitos at dusk are aggressive. The property provides repellent and burns coils at the restaurant, but bring DEET-based repellent for evening pool sessions.
Book Rinjani Lodge if you are doing the Mount Rinjani trek and want a comfortable, scenic pre-trek and post-trek base. Book it for the photograph if you genuinely value that kind of view (the pool overlook is exceptional). Book it for a 2-night break from the heat of coastal Lombok if you have a flexible itinerary.
Skip Rinjani Lodge if you aren't trekking and just want a "nice place to stay" — Senaru is remote and the 3-hour drive from the airport isn't justified by the property alone. Skip it if you need walkable dining variety, modern hotel amenities (gym, spa, multiple restaurants), or any kind of nightlife. The lodge is a base, and a beautiful one, but it is not a destination in itself.
