Gili Trawangan, north of harbour
★ 4.0(2,840 reviews)
Mad Monkey on Gili Trawangan is Southeast Asia's most established party-hostel chain, with dorms from 200,000 IDR, a pool deck that turns into the bar by 9pm, and a daily events calendar built for backpackers in their early 20s. It absolutely delivers what it promises — and absolutely fails anyone who wants sleep before 1am or a quiet morning. Book it for the chaos, skip it for anything else.
# Mad Monkey Hostel Gili Trawangan: The Party Default
Mad Monkey is the dominant party-hostel brand in Southeast Asia, with properties across the Philippines, Cambodia, Indonesia, and beyond. The Gili Trawangan branch opened in 2017 and quickly became the default landing pad for backpackers in their early 20s arriving on the island. It's not subtle and doesn't try to be.
A regional chain built around a consistent formula: large dorms, big pool deck, on-site bar, structured events calendar designed to make solo travellers feel included within an hour of arrival. The Gili T property has around 200 beds across multiple dorm configurations plus private rooms, set on Jalan Pantai about 5 minutes north of the main harbour and a 5-minute walk from the beach.
The crowd is 18–28, heavily Australian, British, and European, with a strong solo-traveller skew. Couples and 30+ travellers exist but are the minority.
Multiple dorm tiers. 12-bed mixed dorm with air-con runs 200,000 IDR per bed. 8-bed mixed and 6-bed female-only dorms are 230,000–260,000 IDR. 4-bed pod-style dorms are 290,000 IDR.
Private rooms come in two flavours: standard private with shared bathroom at 500,000 IDR for two, and air-con private with ensuite at 650,000–700,000 IDR. The privates are honestly over-priced for what you get — for the 700,000 IDR price point you can find substantially nicer non-hostel options on Gili T like Martas Hotel or Le Pirate Beach Club.
All rates include breakfast.
Mad Monkey is on Jalan Pantai about 200m north of the main harbour landing, on the inland side of the road. The beach is a 5-minute walk through a small alley. The island's main bar strip runs along the harbour-facing beach, all within a 5-15 minute walk.
For arrivals: any boat from Bangsal, Bali (Padang Bai), or Lombok mainland docks at Gili T's main harbour, and Mad Monkey is signposted from there. The walk takes about 4 minutes with luggage. There are no motorised vehicles on Gili T — bikes and horse carts only.
The pool and bar are the centre of gravity. Pool is open from 8am to 1am, bar runs from noon to 1am, music plays continuously from late afternoon until close. Happy hour from 5–9pm is the social peak when most guests gather. There's a daily activities board: beach volleyball at 4pm, sunset booze cruise at 6pm a few nights a week, pub crawl at 9pm.
Beds are functional. Memory-foam mattresses, privacy curtains, reading lights, USB sockets, lockers. Air-con is real and works. The bathroom situation is the main pinch point — 4 bathrooms per 30-bed cluster, mobbed in the morning rush, fine off-peak.
The free breakfast is a genuine inclusion. Eggs cooked to order, toast, fruit, coffee, juice, served from 7.30 to 10am at the on-site cafe. It's not gourmet but it covers a hangover.
The noise issue is the central trade-off. Music plays from the pool deck until 1am every night with no exceptions, and dorm rooms — even at the back of the property — pick it up. Earplugs help; expensive earplugs help more. If you require a 10pm bedtime, this is not the right hostel.
The activity organising is the main reason to choose Mad Monkey over a smaller hostel. Within an hour of check-in you'll be invited to whatever is happening that day, and the staff are good at including people who arrived alone. By night three you'll have a friend group; by night five you'll know everyone.
Book Mad Monkey if you're a solo traveller in your early 20s on your first big Asia trip, you want to meet people fast, you actively want a party, and you've factored in earplugs and that you'll sleep less than usual.
Skip Mad Monkey if you're 30+ and not in party mode, if you want quiet, if you want beachfront, or if you want value at the private-room price (better options exist). Mahamaya Resort, Martas Hotel, or any of the north-end Gili T properties offer a fundamentally different experience.
