Mataram, central Lombok capital
★ 4.4(320 reviews)
Lombok Backpacker is the only proper hostel in Mataram (Lombok's capital), offering capsule pods from 200,000 IDR with air-con, decent Wi-Fi, and a central location near Cakranegara market. It's not a destination — it's a transit hostel for travellers waiting on flights, hospital visits, sim card and bank logistics, or arriving late and moving on next morning. The pods are clean and quiet, the staff are switched-on, and the surrounding area is real Indonesian city rather than tourist strip.
# Lombok Backpacker Mataram: The Transit Capsule Hotel
Lombok Backpacker opened in 2021 as the first modern capsule-style hostel in Mataram, filling a clear gap: travellers needing a clean, quiet, central place in Lombok's capital without the price of midrange hotels or the discomfort of older budget guesthouses. It's not a destination — it's pure transit utility, and it does that job well.
A small Indonesian-Chinese partnership that took the modern Asian capsule-hostel formula (Singapore, Tokyo, Hong Kong) and adapted it for Mataram's price point and infrastructure. The property has 32 capsule pods across two dorm rooms (16 pods each) plus 4 private rooms, all on a single floor in a converted office building.
The crowd is mixed and transient — travellers connecting between airport and the islands, digital nomads using Mataram as a remote-work base for a week or two, occasional medical or visa-run travellers, plus Indonesian business travellers from Bali or Java.
Two categories.
Capsule Pod — single capsule with single mattress, privacy curtain, reading light, USB and standard sockets, fan, locker access, and shared bathroom. Air-conditioned dorm room. 200,000 IDR per pod per night. 16 pods per dorm, female-only and mixed options available.
Private Double — small private room with queen bed, air-con, hot-water ensuite bathroom, desk, free Wi-Fi. 380,000–400,000 IDR per night for two.
Breakfast is not included — paid extra at the on-site cafe (40,000–60,000 IDR) or there's a Padang restaurant 50m away open from 6am.
Lombok Backpacker is in Cakranegara, the commercial heart of Mataram, on Jalan Pejanggik. Within a 5-minute walk: Mataram Mall (banks, sim card shops, supermarket, ATMs), Cakranegara traditional market, multiple Padang and Sasak restaurants, several pharmacies and a small hospital.
For onward travel: Grab from anywhere in Mataram — the airport is 40 minutes south (200,000 IDR), Senggigi 30 minutes west (140,000 IDR), Bangsal harbour for Gili boats 60 minutes north (250,000 IDR), Kuta 90 minutes south (350,000 IDR). Public bemo connections also exist from the Mandalika terminal 10 minutes east.
The capsule pod design is the central reason to choose this hostel over a traditional Mataram budget hotel. Each pod has a real privacy curtain (not a flimsy sheet), a properly mounted reading light, two USB and one standard socket, a small mattress shelf for personal items, and air-con vents that you can actually adjust. After a few nights in old-school hostels with thin sheets and no privacy, the pod feels like a small luxury.
The Wi-Fi is genuinely the best of any Lombok hostel and rivals midrange hotels. Real bandwidth, low latency, works for video calls and remote work. This is a meaningful differentiator — most Lombok accommodation has slow or unreliable Wi-Fi, which makes Lombok Backpacker the de facto choice for digital nomads needing a few days of focused work.
Bathrooms are the main pinch point. Six bathrooms total for the dorms, mobbed at 7–9am and 6–8pm. Off-peak it's fine. If reliable bathroom availability matters, book one of the four private rooms with ensuite.
The 24/7 reception is genuinely useful. Late-night arrivals from delayed flights are handled without drama, early-morning departures get coffee and luggage storage, and the staff actually know which Grab driver to call for which destination at which hour.
Mataram itself is not a tourist destination. There are 2 or 3 mid-tier Western restaurants in town, a couple of Italian places, and otherwise it's authentic Indonesian city — Padang restaurants, Sasak food stalls, Chinese-Indonesian seafood places, lots of warungs. For travellers wanting variety it's a good food city; for travellers expecting tourist-strip Western options, Mataram will feel limited.
The surrounding streets are busy. Traffic noise carries until around 11pm; motorbike noise picks up again around 5am. Inside the dorms the noise is muffled but not silent. Earplugs help. The private rooms are quieter.
Book Lombok Backpacker if you need a transit night in Mataram (late flight, early flight, hospital visit, visa or sim logistics), if you're a digital nomad wanting reliable Wi-Fi for a few days, or if you specifically want to explore Mataram as a city without paying midrange hotel prices.
Skip Lombok Backpacker if you want a Lombok beach holiday — Mataram has no beach, no nightlife, no scene. Senggigi is 30 minutes west for that. Skip it also if you want hostel social vibes — the capsule format is quiet by design and there's minimal common-area culture compared to Kuta or Gili hostels.
