Gili Air, east side
★ 4.5(290 reviews)
Karya Bagus is a small family-run bungalow operation on Gili Air's quieter east side, offering simple thatched fan bungalows from 400,000 IDR set in a tropical garden. It's not luxurious or designed — it's the original Gili budget formula: clean rooms, friendly owners, basic facilities, walkable to the beach. Best for travellers who want authenticity over polish, and accept that fan-only and basic Wi-Fi are part of the deal.
# Karya Bagus Bungalows Gili Air: The Original Gili Budget Formula
Karya Bagus is one of the longer-established bungalow operations on Gili Air, family-owned and run continuously for over 15 years. It sits on the quiet east side of the island, away from the harbour and the bar strip, and represents the original Gili budget formula before boutique design hotels took over.
The Karya family — second generation now actively running things — built and operate the property. There are 8 bungalows total, all single-room thatched-roof structures with attached outdoor bathrooms, set around a central garden with frangipani trees, banana plants, and a few hammocks.
The crowd is mixed and typically older than the average Gili T budget guest — couples in their 30s and 40s, retired travellers, occasional digital nomads who want quiet over speed. Many guests are repeat visitors who've stayed multiple times across the years.
Three categories, all fan-only.
Standard Bungalow — single room with double bed, mosquito net, terrace with hammock, attached outdoor bathroom (cold water shower, sit-down toilet). 400,000 IDR per night for two.
Deluxe Bungalow — slightly larger room with both queen bed and single bed (sleeps 3), larger bathroom, larger terrace. 500,000 IDR per night.
Family Bungalow — two-bedroom unit sharing one bathroom and a larger terrace, sleeps 4. 600,000 IDR per night.
All rates include a freshly cooked Indonesian breakfast — typically nasi goreng or mie goreng, fresh fruit, banana pancakes, coffee or tea, served at the small terrace by reception.
Gili Air is the smallest and quietest of the three Gili islands, with the harbour and main amenities concentrated on the south and southwest. Karya Bagus is on the east side facing Lombok mainland, about a 12-minute walk or 5-minute bicycle ride from the harbour.
The east beach is 4 minutes' walk away, accessed via a small lane through coconut palms. It's a quieter beach than the harbour-side stretches, good for snorkelling at high tide and beautiful at sunrise.
For arrivals: any boat docks at Gili Air's main harbour. From there it's a 50,000 IDR cidomo (horse cart) or a 12-minute walk with luggage to Karya Bagus. The path is unpaved in places — wheeled luggage is awkward.
The bungalows are simple and the simplicity is the point. Single room, queen bed under a heavy mosquito net, small wardrobe, fan, an exterior door opening directly onto the garden terrace. Outdoor bathroom is a walled enclosure with concrete floor, cold-water shower, sit-down toilet, sink.
This format works well in Gili Air's climate most of the year. The sea breeze keeps bungalows liveable through evening, and the cold-water shower feels good after a hot beach day. Light sleepers who need air-con or hot water won't enjoy this — they should book a midrange or boutique property.
Breakfast is the daily highlight. The owner's wife cooks each guest's order fresh on a small kitchen behind the reception terrace. Nasi goreng with crispy fried egg is the signature. Coffee is local Lombok robusta, strong and a bit gritty in the bottom of the cup. Fresh fruit changes daily — papaya, banana, mango in season.
There's no on-site restaurant beyond breakfast. The east-side beach restaurants (Sejuk, Scallywags, a couple of warungs) are 4–7 minutes' walk and cover lunch and dinner well. Walking to the harbour-side bar strip for evening drinks takes 10–12 minutes.
Wi-Fi exists at reception only and is fine for messaging and basic browsing. Inside bungalows there's no signal. For most of Karya Bagus's target guests this is a feature rather than a bug.
Mosquitos are real in early evening — the garden setting and standing water nearby. Repellent solves it; mosquito coils on the terrace also work.
Book Karya Bagus if you want quiet, authenticity, and family hospitality on Gili Air, you don't need air-con or hot water, and you value walking distance to a quiet beach over harbour-side convenience.
Skip Karya Bagus if you need air-con, hot water, in-room Wi-Fi, or a pool. Mahamaya Gili Air is the obvious step-up boutique alternative for couples wanting more comfort. Adi Bungalows, also east side, is similar but with slightly newer fittings.
