Gerupuk Outside refers to the two advanced reef breaks on the outer reef of Gerupuk Bay — Outside Right and Outside Left (also called Pelawangan). Both are powerful waves for experienced surfers, breaking on bigger swells when the inside breaks are too small. Boat access only, from Gerupuk village. Less crowded than Mawi but with serious reef and currents.
# Gerupuk Outside: The Advanced Reef Twins
Gerupuk Outside is shorthand for two related but distinct advanced reef breaks on the outer reef of Gerupuk Bay: Outside Right and Outside Left (locally Pelawangan). Both are powerful waves that work when the inside breaks (Kid's Point, Don Don, Inside) are too small to be interesting. Together they're the reason advanced surfers staying in Kuta will choose Gerupuk over the longer drive to Mawi or Desert Point.
Type: Right-hand reef break.
Wave size:
Wave shape: Steep takeoff zone with a workable shoulder, then a critical inside section that grinds over reef. Barrels appear on the right swell.
Tide preference: Higher tides — low tide exposes the inside reef and the wave becomes dangerously shallow.
Lineup density: Moderate to heavy. Outside Right has the highest crowd density of any Gerupuk break, with experienced Lombok surfers and confident travelers competing for the takeoff zone.
Type: Left-hand reef break.
Wave size:
Wave shape: Longer wall than Outside Right, less critical takeoff but a faster overall ride. Less likely to barrel but more likely to deliver long carving sections.
Tide preference: Mid-tide — works across a wider tidal window than Outside Right.
Lineup density: Lighter than Outside Right. The further-out location and goofy-foot orientation keeps regular crowds smaller. Often the better choice for advanced surfers wanting space.
Boat from Gerupuk village (150,000–250,000 IDR round-trip — slightly more than the inside breaks because the outer reef is further). Tell the driver "Outside Right" or "Outside Left / Pelawangan" — they're different boats' worth of distance away from each other.
In the lineup at Outside Right, sit deep with the regulars and watch the rotation. Locals don't tolerate snaking. The takeoff zone is small and any visiting surfer needs to read the lineup before paddling for waves.
At Outside Left, the lineup is more spread out. Sit slightly outside of where you think the wave breaks; the wave shifts further out on bigger sets.
Both Outside breaks are genuinely advanced waves that deliver real Indonesia-quality surf on the right day. Compared to Mawi:
For most advanced surfers staying in Kuta, the Outside breaks are the daily go-to and Mawi is the special-day choice.
Outside Right: 12–25 surfers at peak times. Competitive lineup. Respect priority.
Outside Left: 6–15 surfers at peak times. More relaxed lineup. Atmosphere is friendlier.
Both breaks have lighter crowds in the afternoon, but afternoon conditions are usually worse (onshore wind). Better to surf the dawn session and accept the morning crowd than fight ugly afternoon waves.
The shallow reef on the inside section of both breaks is the main hazard. Wipeouts on takeoff can send you onto reef in shin-deep water. Booties are mandatory. A backup leash and ding repair are smart additions.
Currents on bigger swells (5ft+) run strong between the outer reef and the channel. Stay close to your boat and don't paddle across the rip without a clear plan.
Outside Left is further out than Outside Right, which means rescue is slower if something goes wrong. Don't surf Outside Left alone.
The boat is your safety net. Confirm pickup time and signal location before paddling out. Drivers shuttle multiple groups; if you don't communicate, you'll wait.
Medical help is in Kuta town (15–20 minutes by boat plus scooter).
Drive 15 minutes from Kuta Lombok to Gerupuk village. Park at the boat launch. Hire a local outrigger for 150,000–250,000 IDR round-trip and tell the driver 'Outside Right' or 'Outside Left' / 'Pelawangan'. Boat ride from village to the outer reef is 10–15 minutes. Establish pickup time before paddling out.
Outside vs Inside (same bay): Outside is far more powerful and reef-bottomed; Inside is mellow and progression-friendly. Outside Right vs Mawi: Outside Right is less crowded with similar wave quality on the right day; Mawi is more critical and more famous. Outside Left (Pelawangan) vs Desert Point: both quality lefts, but Pelawangan is far more accessible while Desert Point is longer and more mechanical when it works.
