Gerupuk Inside is one of five surf breaks at Gerupuk Bay on Lombok's south coast — a forgiving right-hand reef break suitable for improving beginners and confident intermediates. The wave breaks slowly over reef and sand mix, offering long, mellow rides ideal for surfers transitioning from whitewater to green waves. Boat access from Gerupuk village (100k IDR round-trip).
# Gerupuk Inside: The Wave You Make Progress On
Gerupuk Inside is the wave that takes most Lombok surfers from "I can stand up in whitewater" to "I can ride a green wave". It's a forgiving right-hand reef break inside Gerupuk Bay, with a slow takeoff and a long workable shoulder that rewards practice without punishing mistakes. Surf schools bring intermediate students here after they've outgrown the smaller breaks, and independent surfers use it as a session anchor when conditions don't justify pushing harder.
Type: Right-hand reef break with mixed sand and coral bottom.
Wave size range:
Direction: Right only, occasionally a tiny left peeling off the same peak on bigger swells.
Wave shape: Slow takeoff, then a long mellow shoulder that lets you set rail and trim. Not a high-performance wave but excellent for progression.
Section count: One main shoulder, occasionally a faster inside section at lower tides.
This is the wave for genuinely improving surfers. The honest range:
Peak season is April through October. Off-season the wave still works on smaller swells, with crowds dropping noticeably.
Boat from Gerupuk village (100,000 IDR round-trip per person, or bundled into lesson packages). Drop in the lineup, paddle to the inside shoulder if you're still building confidence, deeper if you're chasing real waves.
Lineup priority is friendly. Most surfers here are improving rather than advanced, and the local rotation is patient. Don't drop in on the takeoff peak — sit slightly inside and pick the second wave of each set.
Gerupuk Inside is not a wave anyone flies to Lombok specifically for. What it is: a genuinely useful wave for the largest segment of visiting surfers — the people who can stand up but aren't yet carving on green walls. It delivers consistent rides without consequence, in a friendly bay with strong surf-school infrastructure.
Limitations:
For its target skill range (improving beginners and confident intermediates), Inside is one of the best waves on Lombok.
Inside typically holds 15–25 surfers at peak times — a mix of school students, independent intermediates, and advanced surfers warming up. The crowd is friendly but the lineup can feel busy. Dawn weekday sessions are noticeably quieter (8–12 surfers).
The mixed sand-and-reef bottom means cuts are less common than at full-reef breaks like Outside Right or Mawi, but they still happen. Wear booties.
Boat traffic in Gerupuk Bay is heavy — multiple outriggers shuttle surfers between the five breaks throughout the morning. Stay aware of boats when paddling and don't paddle across boat lanes.
Currents are mild on small days but become noticeable on 5ft+ swells. The bay's overall current generally moves out toward the channel; if you find yourself drifting, paddle perpendicular to the current toward shore.
Establish your boat pickup time before paddling out. Drivers shuttle multiple groups and won't wait indefinitely for you.
Sun exposure is the underrated hazard. A 2-hour beginner lesson in midday Indonesian sun is a serious burn waiting to happen. Apply zinc, wear a rashguard, and reapply.
Drive 15 minutes from Kuta Lombok to Gerupuk village. Park at the boat launch (5–10k IDR). Hire a local outrigger for 100,000 IDR round-trip; tell the driver 'Inside' or point to the right-hand peak inside the bay. Surf schools bundle the boat into lesson packages. Boat ride from village to break is 5–7 minutes.
Inside vs Outside Right (same bay): Inside is far more forgiving with longer ride and slower wave; Outside Right is faster, more powerful, and advanced-level. Inside vs Don Don: Don Don is an even smaller wave for first-ever lessons; Inside is the next step up. Inside vs Selong Belanak: Selong Belanak is sand-bottom beach break; Inside is reef-bottom point — different feel, similar progression value.
