Ekas Outside is the advanced reef break at Ekas Bay on Lombok's southeast coast — a powerful right-hand wave with steep takeoffs and occasional barrels on the right swell. Less crowded than equivalent waves at Gerupuk or Mawi but no less serious. Boat access only from Ekas village.
# Ekas Outside: The Advanced Right at Ekas Bay
Ekas Outside is the advanced surfer's wave at Ekas Bay. While Inside delivers mellow progression rides for beginners and intermediates, Outside is a different proposition entirely — a powerful right-hand reef break on the outer reef, with steep takeoffs and occasional barrel sections on the right day. The wave is one of the most under-the-radar advanced breaks on Lombok, kept quiet by Ekas's distance from the main Kuta surf scene.
This page focuses on the wave itself. For broader Ekas Bay context see Surfing Ekas Bay; for the beginner option see Ekas Inside.
Type: Right-hand reef break over coral.
Direction: Right only — the bay's southern orientation favors right-hand peelers off the outer reef.
Wave size:
Wave shape: Steep takeoff zone, then a fast, defined wall with a critical inside section. On the right swell the wave throws a lip on the inside and creates real barrel opportunities. Less mechanical than Desert Point but more consistent than Mawi for day-to-day quality.
Section count: One main wall with a critical inside section. On bigger days the wave can extend 80–120 meters with multiple sections to navigate.
Genuinely advanced. The honest minimum:
Strong intermediates can occasionally manage Outside on smaller days (3–4 ft) when the takeoff is forgiving, but the wave is firmly in advanced territory overall. Don't paddle out unless you've handled Outside Right at Gerupuk or equivalent.
Peak season is April–October, with June–August the most consistent.
From Ekas village, hire an outrigger to Outside (250,000–400,000 IDR round-trip). The boat ride is 10–15 minutes — longer than Inside because the outer reef is further from the village. Tell the driver "Outside" specifically; don't let them drop you at Inside by default.
In the lineup, sit on the takeoff peak with the regulars. The crowd is small (typically 6–12 surfers) and committed; respect the rotation. On bigger days, sit slightly deeper than the obvious takeoff spot — the wave shifts inside on larger sets.
For the wave itself: commit on takeoff and trust the wall. The inside section is fast; pulling back creates wipeout risk and you'll miss the barrel section.
Ekas Outside is one of the better-kept secrets of Lombok surfing. Compared to Gerupuk Outside Right:
Compared to Mawi Right:
Compared to Desert Point:
For advanced surfers willing to drive to Ekas, Outside delivers genuine quality with manageable crowds. The trade-off is the access — most visiting surfers default to Gerupuk because it's closer to Kuta.
Outside typically holds 6–12 surfers at peak times. Weekday dawns can be quiet (4–8 surfers). Weekend dawns slightly busier but still manageable.
The lineup is mostly Ekas surf-camp guests and a small handful of Lombok-based regulars. Atmosphere is friendly but the small takeoff zone means waves get shared rather than dominated.
The reef on the inside section is sharp and shallow. Booties are mandatory. A helmet is smart on overhead days.
The outer reef location means rescue is slower if something goes wrong. Don't surf Outside alone; surf with someone who can signal the boat if you're in trouble.
Currents on bigger swells run strong between the reef and the channel. Stay close to your boat and learn the rip pattern before pushing yourself.
Boat dependency is the practical safety concern. Confirm pickup time before paddling out, and don't paddle so far from the boat that you can't signal it.
Medical help is 1+ hour away in Kuta. Pack a basic first aid kit and antiseptic for reef cuts.
From Kuta Lombok, 1–1.5 hour drive east via Awang to Ekas village. At the village, hire an outrigger to Outside (250–400k IDR round-trip — slightly more than Inside because the break is further out). Surf camps bundle boat into stay packages. Boat ride from village to the outer reef is 10–15 minutes.
Ekas Outside vs Ekas Inside: completely different waves — Outside is advanced reef, Inside is mellow beginner-intermediate. Ekas Outside vs Gerupuk Outside Right: similar skill level and wave character, but Ekas Outside has lighter crowd and more remote feel; Gerupuk Outside Right has stronger lineup density and more accessible logistics. Ekas Outside vs Mawi Right: Mawi is faster and more critical; Ekas Outside is slightly more forgiving and far less crowded.
