Ekas Inside is one of three breaks at Ekas Bay on Lombok's southeast coast — a mellow right-hand wave breaking over mostly sandy bottom with patches of reef. Suitable for beginners after their first 3–5 lessons and confident intermediates. Quieter than Gerupuk Inside with a more remote, surf-camp atmosphere.
# Ekas Inside: The Quiet Beginner-Intermediate Wave
Ekas Inside is one of the most underused waves in Lombok's beginner-intermediate range. The mellow right-hander breaks inside Ekas Bay on Lombok's southeast coast, far enough from the Kuta surf scene that crowds are consistently light. For surfers progressing from whitewater to green waves who want a quieter alternative to Gerupuk Inside, Ekas Inside delivers.
Type: Right-hand wave breaking over mostly sandy bottom with patches of reef.
Direction: Right only.
Wave size:
Wave shape: Slow takeoff into a long, mellow shoulder. The wave doesn't punish hesitation — you can pop up late and still make the wave. This is exactly what improving beginners need.
Bottom: Predominantly sand with patches of reef, especially on the inside section. Booties recommended despite the soft impression.
The honest range:
Inside is the wave you outgrow within a season. That's its purpose.
Peak season is April–October. Off-season the wave still works on smaller swells with near-zero crowd.
From Ekas village, hire an outrigger for 200,000–300,000 IDR round-trip and tell the driver "Inside". The boat ride to the lineup is around 5 minutes. Surf schools and stay packages bundle the boat into broader prices.
In the lineup, sit on the inside shoulder if you're still building confidence and pick the smaller secondary waves. As you progress, sit deeper toward the takeoff zone for the main wave.
Lineup priority is friendly. Most people in the water are improving rather than competing for waves. Patience pays.
Ekas Inside is genuinely useful for the largest segment of Lombok visitors — the people who can stand up but aren't ready for reef breaks. Its appeal:
Limitations:
For its target skill range, Inside is one of the better waves on Lombok. For everyone else, look elsewhere.
Inside typically holds 5–10 surfers at peak times — vastly less than Gerupuk Inside (15–25) or Selong Belanak (60+). On weekday dawns the wave can be near-empty. The lighter crowd is the main practical reason to choose Ekas over Gerupuk for beginner-intermediate sessions.
The mostly-sand bottom means cuts are less common than at full-reef breaks, but the inside reef patches catch unwary feet. Wear booties.
Boat dependency is the practical safety concern. Confirm pickup time before paddling out and don't surf so far from the boat that you can't signal it. Currents are mild on small days but pick up at higher tides; if you find yourself drifting, paddle perpendicular to the current toward shore.
Sun exposure is total. A 2-hour beginner lesson in midday sun risks serious burn. Apply zinc, wear a rashguard, and reapply.
Medical help is 1+ hour away in Kuta. Don't surf alone, especially on bigger days.
From Kuta Lombok, 1–1.5 hour drive east via Awang to Ekas village. At the village, hire an outrigger to the Inside break (200–300k IDR round-trip). Surf camps in Ekas village bundle boat and lesson. The Inside break is the closest of the three Ekas waves to the village; boat ride is around 5 minutes.
Ekas Inside vs Ekas Outside: Inside is mellow and beginner-friendly; Outside is powerful and advanced. Ekas Inside vs Gerupuk Inside: similar skill level, but Ekas Inside is much quieter and feels more remote; Gerupuk Inside is more accessible from Kuta with stronger surf-school infrastructure. Ekas Inside vs Selong Belanak: Selong Belanak is sand-bottom beach break; Ekas Inside is mostly-sand point — different feel, similar progression value.
