Belongas Bay sits on Lombok's far south coast and holds two of Indonesia's most respected big-wave reef breaks: The Cobblestones (a heavy left) and Belongas Right (a long right-hander). Both are expert-only waves that come alive on solid SW swell — typically 6ft and up. Remote, fickle, and serious. Not a casual destination.
# Surfing Belongas: Lombok's Big-Wave Frontier
Belongas Bay is where Lombok's surf scene goes quiet and serious. The bay sits on the far south coast, accessible by an unpaved drive or a dedicated charter from Kuta. It holds two of Indonesia's most respected big-wave reef breaks: The Cobblestones, a heavy left, and Belongas Right, a long right-hander that's rare and prized in a region dominated by lefts. Both waves are expert-only, fickle, and capable of delivering experiences that few other Indonesian breaks match.
The Cobblestones: A heavy left-hand reef break breaking over a cobblestone-and-coral bottom (giving the name). The wave throws a thick, fast lip on solid swell. Takeoffs are steep and the inside section grinds over shallow reef. Suits experienced left-foot riders who've surfed Indo big waves before.
Belongas Right: The signature wave for goofy-foots. A long right-hander that wraps the eastern side of the bay, delivering rides that can extend 100+ meters on the right swell. Less brutal than The Cobblestones but still firmly in expert territory.
Wave size needed:
Belongas is genuinely expert. The honest minimum:
Anyone calling themselves "advanced" but who hasn't surfed proper Indo waves should not paddle out at Belongas. The wave is unforgiving and the reef will end your trip.
The bay wants:
Peak season is May through September, with June–August the most consistent. Outside this window, Belongas is mostly flat or unworkable.
Charter trips from Kuta are the standard approach. Boats run 1.5M–3M IDR per day depending on size, including fuel and a captain who knows the bay. Smaller groups can bundle into shared charters for around 500k IDR per person.
For drivers who want to do it themselves, a 4WD or capable car gets to Belongas village in 1.5–2 hours from Kuta. From the village, hire a local outrigger to the breaks (300k–500k IDR round-trip).
In the lineup, sit deep with the regulars and don't snake. Belongas locals are few but committed, and the lineup operates on respect. Wait your turn, paddle hard, and commit on the takeoff.
Belongas is not a wave you visit casually. It demands:
For surfers willing to commit, Belongas delivers waves that are genuinely world-class and rare. The right-hander especially is a prize because Indo is so left-heavy — finding a quality right of this length is unusual and worth the effort.
For visitors looking for casual surf vacation: skip Belongas entirely. It's not for you and it'll waste your time.
Belongas is one of the least crowded quality breaks in Indonesia. On a good swell, you might see 8–15 surfers across both breaks combined. Compare to Mawi (40+ at one peak) and the appeal is real — but the trade-off is the difficulty of getting there and the swell-dependency.
Off-swell days have near-zero crowd because nobody bothers to show up.
This is the section that matters most at Belongas.
Reef cuts: Both breaks are reef bottom and shallow on the inside. Cuts are common and can be serious. Carry suture strips, antiseptic, and pressure dressings.
Hold-downs: 6ft+ wipeouts can hold you down for 10+ seconds. Train your breath-hold before the trip and surf with people who can rescue you.
Currents: The bay has strong currents on bigger swells. Learn the layout before pushing yourself, and don't surf alone.
Sharks: Rare but reported. Don't surf at dawn or dusk if you're concerned, and don't paddle near river mouths after rain.
Medical: Belongas is 2+ hours from any real medical facility. You must be self-sufficient. Pack a serious first-aid kit and have a evacuation plan.
Conclusion: Don't surf Belongas without an experienced local guide on your first trip. The cost is small, the safety value is enormous.
From Kuta Lombok, drive south-west around 1.5–2 hours via Sengkol and the back roads to Belongas village. Roads are partly unpaved and challenging. Most surfers arrive via charter boat from Kuta or via dedicated surf trips that bundle accommodation in or near Belongas. Day-tripping is impractical — the drive plus the boat ride consumes the entire dawn window.
Belongas vs Desert Point: similar expert-only character but Belongas right-hander is rarer (Indonesia is mostly lefts), making it a destination for goofy-foots; Desert Point is more famous and longer. Belongas vs Mawi: both heavy, but Belongas needs much bigger swell and fewer days deliver; Mawi works more often.
