Are Guling is a small, sheltered bay around 15 minutes west of Kuta Lombok with a friendly beach-break wave that works well for true beginners and improving intermediates. Less crowded than Selong Belanak and easier on hard-trade-wind days because the bay sits at an angle that softens onshore chop. A solid pick for first-week surfers.
# Surfing Are Guling: A Quieter Beginner Bay
Are Guling sits around 15 minutes west of Kuta Lombok along the south coast road, in a small horseshoe bay between Selong Belanak and Mawun. The wave is a friendly beach break with sand bottom and forgiving shape — exactly what beginners need to make progress without fear of reef. It's also far less crowded than Selong Belanak, which makes it a sleeper pick for surf-school students who want more wave time per lesson.
Are Guling has a sandy beach-break setup with two main peaks: a central peak that breaks both directions, and a slightly longer wave at the western end of the bay that breaks left more often than right. Both are mellow and forgiving, with a soft tumbling whitewater that's ideal for beginners practicing pop-ups.
Wave size is typically 1–4 ft, occasionally larger when a strong SW swell pushes through. Even on bigger days, the bay's shape softens the wave compared to more exposed beaches.
Are Guling is genuinely a beginner bay. The honest skill range:
The bay rewards confidence-building more than skill development. After a week here, most surfers should move on to Gerupuk Inside.
The wave wants:
Peak season is April–October. Off-season (Nov–Mar) the bay still works on smaller swells, and crowds drop to near-zero.
For absolute beginners, book a lesson with one of the schools that operates from the bay or from Kuta. A single session runs 350,000–500,000 IDR including board, instructor, and rashguard. Lessons typically last 90 minutes to 2 hours.
For improving surfers paddling out independently:
Are Guling is not a destination wave. Nobody flies to Lombok to surf it specifically. What it is, instead, is a useful complement to a south-coast surf trip:
Don't expect long rides or barrels. Do expect a relaxed atmosphere and a wave that won't punish learning.
Are Guling typically holds 10–20 surfers at peak times, mostly beginners with schools. Compare to Selong Belanak which can have 80+ on a busy weekend, and the appeal is clear. The crowd is also friendly and patient — most people there are learning, and there's no localism to navigate.
Weekday off-season sessions can be near-empty.
Sand bottom means cuts are rare, but the inside section gets shallow at low tide and the inexperienced can scrape elbows and knees on hardened sand. Sea urchins are present on the rocky edges of the bay; stay in the central sand zone.
The biggest hazard is sun exposure. The bay has limited shade, and a 2-hour beginner lesson in midday sun is a sunburn waiting to happen. Apply zinc and SPF 50, wear a rashguard, and reapply.
Stingrays occasionally rest in shin-deep water. Shuffle your feet when wading in to avoid stepping on one.
From Kuta Lombok, drive west 15–20 minutes via Selong Belanak road. The Are Guling turnoff is signposted; follow the small road down to the bay (5 minutes from the main road). Parking at the warungs costs 5–10k IDR. The beach is a short walk down a sandy track.
Are Guling vs Selong Belanak: similar sand-bottom beginner bay but Selong Belanak is bigger, more crowded, and has more schools; Are Guling is smaller and quieter with similar wave quality. Are Guling vs Mawun: Mawun is also nearby and similar but has even smaller waves — better for swimming than surfing on most days.
