Mawun Beach is a perfect horseshoe-shaped bay on Lombok's south-central coast, flanked by two grassy headlands and protected from open swell. The west-southwest orientation and symmetrical bay shape make it a photographer's sunset — calm reflective water, headland silhouettes, almost zero infrastructure. 10k IDR entry fee. 30 minutes west of Kuta.
# Mawun Beach Sunset: South Lombok's Perfect Horseshoe Bay
Mawun Beach is the photographer's south-coast sunset on Lombok. A nearly perfect horseshoe-shaped bay flanked by two green headlands, protected from open Indian Ocean swell, with calm reflective water at low and mid tide. Where Kuta Beach has bars and Selong Belanak has restaurants, Mawun has almost nothing — just the bay, two coconut sellers, and the sunset.
Mawun's bay opens to the west-southwest. The view includes:
The beach is roughly 700m of golden sand inside a nearly closed bay. The headlands frame the sunset.
The sweet spot is May, June, September — peak weather and minimal crowds.
Mawun Beach sits at GPS -8.886, 116.214 on the south-central coast. Access:
The road from Kuta has been resurfaced in recent years but still has tight blind bends through limestone hills. Drive carefully. There is a small entry gate where you pay 10k IDR per person plus parking 5–10k IDR.
Mawun is one of Lombok's most photogenic sunset bays:
Wide bay shot: stand on the beach center, frame headlands left and right, sun on horizon. Use 16–24mm wide angle. Shoot at mid-tide for reflection.
Headland silhouette: tight zoom (70–200mm) on either headland with sun behind or beside. The western headland silhouette is the iconic shot.
Elevated view: hike 10 minutes up the eastern headland (less steep than western) for a top-down bay panorama with the sunset framing the symmetry.
Reflective water: at mid-tide on calm evenings, the bay becomes a mirror. Get low to capture the full reflection.
Gear notes:
Before sunset (2–5pm):
After sunset (6:30pm onward):
A standard Mawun afternoon: arrive 3pm, swim, climb headland 5pm, sunset 6:15pm on the beach, drive 30 min back to Kuta for dinner by 7:15pm.
Mawun is consistently quieter than Kuta or Selong Belanak:
The headlands give visual privacy even when the beach is busy.
A typical Mawun trip:
Among Lombok's cheapest sunset destinations because there are no restaurants or bars to spend money at.
Mawun has no:
This is the trade-off: postcard beach with zero infrastructure. Bring everything you need and plan dinner back in Kuta.
Mawun's protected bay shape gives reliable calm swimming:
Check a tide app. Most evenings have at least mid-tide somewhere in the sunset window.
The two headlands are integral to Mawun's character:
Eastern headland (right when facing the sea): grassy slope, climbable in 10 minutes, gives elevated view. Recommended.
Western headland (left): steeper, rockier, climbable in 15 minutes for the experienced. Better view but requires more effort.
Both make excellent sunset photography vantage points. Don't climb after dark — descents are tricky without lights.
Mawun and Selong Belanak are 15 minutes apart and complement each other:
A two-day south-coast plan: Selong morning + lunch, Mawun afternoon + sunset.
Mawun Beach sunset is the photographer's quiet south-coast option. Horseshoe bay, headland silhouettes, reflective water, no bars to clutter the composition. The trade-off is zero infrastructure — you bring everything and dinner happens back in Kuta. Forty-five minutes before sunset, on the headland or center beach, is the formula. Drive home before full dark. Twenty-five thousand rupiah total.
Mawun Beach is on Lombok's south coast at GPS -8.886, 116.214, about 22 km west of Kuta. From Kuta Lombok: 30 minutes west by scooter or car along the coastal road past Selong Belanak turnoff. From Lombok Airport: 50 minutes via the bypass. The road has been improved but still has tight bends — drive carefully. Park at the entry gate.
Mawun vs Selong Belanak: Selong is wider with more amenities; Mawun is a smaller, more enclosed horseshoe with photographic symmetry. Mawun vs Tanjung Aan: Tanjung Aan has Merese Hill backdrop; Mawun has headland symmetry. Mawun vs Kuta Beach: Kuta has bars, Mawun has solitude. Best choice if photography and quiet matter more than amenities.
