Mawun Beach is a dramatic horseshoe bay 14km west of Kuta Lombok, framed by steep green hills and protected from south swell by its enclosed shape. The snorkeling is modest — small reef patches at the east and west headlands hold standard reef fish, but the central bay is mostly sandy bottom. Mawun is primarily a beach destination with strong swimming and dramatic scenery; treat it as a beautiful beach day with optional snorkeling rather than a snorkel destination on its own.
# Snorkeling Mawun Beach: A Beautiful Bay With Honest Reef Reality
Mawun Beach is one of the most dramatically beautiful bays on the south coast of Lombok — a near-perfect horseshoe of white sand framed by steep green hills, with calm water in the protected center and crashing surf on the headlands. The beach itself is among the most photographed on the south coast, alongside Tanjung Aan and Selong Belanak.
The snorkeling, honestly, is a footnote to the scenery. If you've come to Mawun expecting Sekotong-quality reef, you'll be disappointed. If you've come for a beautiful beach day with optional shore snorkeling at the headlands, you'll have a great time.
Mawun is roughly 800m wide, with steep green hills rising on either side that give the bay its dramatic enclosed feel. The central beach is broad white sand sloping gently into the water — you can walk 40 meters offshore and still be chest-deep. The two headlands are rocky outcrops with small fringing reef patches.
The bay is naturally protected from south swell by its horseshoe shape and the headlands. Most days the central water is calm. Occasional south-westerly weather can push surf into the bay's mouth, but the inner zone usually stays manageable.
The east-side headland (right side facing the water from the beach) has the better snorkel patch. Walk 100m east from the central beach access to where the sand transitions to rocks. Enter the water at the small sandy break between rock outcrops. The reef extends 20–30m from shore in 1.5–3m water with moderate coral cover and the standard reef fish: sergeant majors, parrotfish, wrasse, butterflyfish, occasional small grouper.
The west-side headland has a smaller patch with similar species but lower fish density. Worth a 15-minute snorkel if you're already on that side of the beach.
The central bay itself: sandy bottom with scattered coral patches. Fine for swimming, very limited snorkel interest.
At the east-headland reef in 1.5–3m water:
What you won't see at Mawun: turtles (very rare), sharks (none), spectacular coral cover (moderate at best), large pelagics (no drop-off here).
The east-side hill above Mawun has a viewpoint trail that takes 15 minutes to climb. From the summit you get the iconic horseshoe-bay photo with the steep green hills, the white sand, and the contrast of calm bay water against open ocean beyond. This is the photo most visitors come for.
Best times to climb: morning (7am–9am, cooler, empty) or late afternoon (4pm–5pm, golden light). Avoid midday — the climb is steep, exposed, and brutally hot.
Dry season (April to October): visibility 6–10 meters at the headland reefs, lower in the central bay due to sand suspension. Water 27–28°C.
Wet season (November to March): visibility 3–6 meters with runoff from the inland hills. Snorkeling is still possible on dry days but loses appeal during heavy rain weeks.
Mornings (7am–10am) are dramatically clearer than afternoons. The single best window: 7am–9am during the dry season, before the day-tripper crowds arrive.
Mawun pairs naturally with the other south-coast beaches in a multi-stop day:
Standard south coast day from Kuta:
This packs the best south-coast scenery into a single day. Mawun is a 60–90 minute stop in this itinerary, not a destination on its own.
Mawun has a moderate beach commerce scene — 4–6 warungs along the back of the beach, sun lounger rentals (opening price 100k IDR, real price 30–50k IDR), umbrella rentals, drink and snack vendors, and a few snorkel gear rental stands. Pressure is lower than Selong Belanak and significantly lower than Senggigi but still present.
The parking attendants sometimes demand inflated rates (20–30k IDR for scooter) — the actual posted rate is usually 10k IDR for scooter, 20k IDR for car. Politely confirm.
Vendors at the warungs are friendly but persistent — repeat polite declines work best. Sun loungers are negotiable; the opening price is double what you should actually pay.
Mawun rewards a half-day visit with multiple activities:
Most beach-only visitors leave by 4pm. Staying for sunset is one of the better calls if you have flexibility.
If you're staying in Kuta Lombok and exploring the south coast, yes — Mawun is among the most beautiful bays on this coast and worth a 60–90 minute stop on a coastal day-trip. The east-headland snorkel is a fine add-on activity.
If your snorkel time is limited and you're choosing between Mawun and a Sekotong day-trip, choose Sekotong. The reef is dramatically better and worth the longer drive.
If you specifically want dramatic bay scenery and don't care much about reef quality, Mawun is one of the prettiest beaches in south Lombok. The snorkeling is honestly secondary to the visual appeal.
The honest pitch: dramatically beautiful horseshoe bay with modest reef, perfect for a south-coast day-trip stop, calm and family-friendly, not a snorkeling destination on its own.
Mawun Beach is 14km west of Kuta Lombok, a 25-minute drive on the paved south coastal road through rolling hills. The route passes Selong Belanak and continues west. Self-drive scooter is the most popular access (50–70k IDR/day rental from Kuta). Grab and Gojek work in the area but return pickup can be slow. Hotels arrange car transport for 100–150k IDR. The beach has a parking lot at the entry (10–20k IDR — higher than Tanjung Aan due to less competition) and a row of beachfront warungs and rental vendors.
Mawun vs Tanjung Aan: Aan is calmer and closer to Kuta with similar mediocre snorkeling; Mawun has more dramatic scenery and slightly better headland reefs. Mawun vs Selong Belanak: Selong has better beginner surf and wider beach; Mawun has more dramatic bay shape and quieter atmosphere. Mawun vs serious snorkel destinations: Mawun is honestly second-tier — go to Sekotong or Pink Beach for serious reef.
