Gili Rengit is the deeper turtle Gili of Sekotong with green turtles resting on coral bommies in 5-10m of water and excellent hard-coral coverage along the south-east reef edge. Visibility runs 12-16m in dry season, the strongest in the 3-Gili circuit. Reached by boat from Tawun harbor (35-40 min) on the same day-trip as Bidara and Layar at 100-150k IDR per person shared, or private charter 400-700k.
# Snorkeling Gili Rengit: The Turtle Bommies of Sekotong
Gili Rengit is the easternmost of the standard 3-Gili Sekotong circuit and arguably the best snorkeling of the three. While Layar offers shallower seagrass turtle encounters, Rengit gives you the same turtles plus dramatic coral bommies in 5-10 meters of water — the most photogenic underwater terrain in Sekotong.
Gili Rengit's signature feature is the bommie field on the south-east side. Half a dozen large coral towers (5-8 meters tall, 3-5 meters wide) rise from a sandy bottom in 8-10 meters of water. Each bommie hosts:
Free-divers can drop 3-4 meters down to bommie tops for closer views. Surface snorkelers see plenty from above when visibility is good.
Beyond the bommies, Rengit has solid reef snorkeling:
The reef on the north-west side of the island is less dramatic — focus your time on the south-east.
Visibility at Rengit is the best of the 3-Gili circuit:
Water temperature 27-29 degrees year-round. Currents are mild-to-moderate — usually under 1 knot — but the channel between Rengit and Layar has stronger flow on outgoing tide. Stay south of the channel.
From Mataram or Senggigi, drive 90 minutes south to Tawun harbor in Sekotong. Charter the standard 3-Gili circuit. The boat ride from Tawun to Rengit is the longest of the three at 35-40 minutes.
Pricing (same as Bidara and Layar — it's a package):
Most charters give Rengit 45-75 minutes. The standard sequence:
1. Anchor on south-east side near the bommie field
2. Slip in from boat — water is 8m deep at anchor
3. Snorkel east-south-east along the bommies (with mild current)
4. Float above each bommie for 2-3 minutes looking down
5. Drift back along the inner reef on the opposite tide direction
6. Optional 10-min beach break on the small east beach
7. Re-board for return to Tawun
For best turtle viewing, snorkel slowly above each bommie and wait. Turtles often emerge from overhangs after 1-2 minutes when you stay quiet.
If you free-dive, Rengit's bommies are the highlight of the Sekotong circuit. Standard practice:
Recreational free-divers comfortable to 5-7m get the best photos. Even single-breath tourists at 3-4m get a much better view than surface snorkelers.
The channel between Rengit and Layar runs east-west on outgoing tide. Current speed peaks at 1.5 knots during spring tides and can pull a snorkeler into open water quickly. Rules:
1. Stay south of the channel mouth
2. If you feel the pull east, turn 90 degrees and swim toward the boat
3. Signal the boatman if you cannot make headway against current
4. Do not snorkel between Rengit and Layar — only at the islands themselves
A safety whistle attached to your snorkel is worth carrying.
Rengit conditions vary by season:
Within the day, mid-morning (9:30-11:30am) is best. Sun angle illuminates the bommies and turtles are still active. After 1pm, light drops and turtles retreat.
The 3-Gili Sekotong circuit each have personalities:
For travelers prioritizing snorkeling quality, Rengit is the highlight stop.
Same rules as anywhere with sea turtles:
The bommies host other sensitive marine life too. Do not anchor on coral, do not stand on bommies, do not collect anything.
Beyond standard snorkel kit:
Most travelers do Rengit as part of a circuit:
Standard 3-Gili (5-6 hours): Bidara → Layar → Rengit → return to Tawun
4-Gili with Pink Beach (7-8 hours): Add Pink Beach for lunch and beach time
Turtle focus (4 hours): Skip Bidara, do Layar (90 min) + Rengit (90 min)
Free-diver day: Spend 2 hours at Rengit alone, lunch on the beach, single-island charter
Walk-up at Tawun harbor is standard and cheapest. Hotels and tour operators arrange packages with markup. For solo travelers seeking shared boats, ask other tourists in Mataram cafes the night before — most boatmen need 4-6 people to run the trip economically.
Gili Rengit is the snorkeling highlight of Sekotong. The combination of dramatic bommies, reliable turtles, healthy coral, and the best visibility on the circuit makes it the stop to maximize. If your boatman tries to cut Rengit short to push you back to Tawun early, push back — this is the one to spend time at.
Drive 90 minutes south from Mataram or Senggigi to Tawun harbor in Sekotong. Charter the standard 3-Gili boat circuit (Bidara, Layar, Rengit). Boat ride from Tawun to Rengit is 35-40 minutes — the furthest of the three islands. Most charters anchor on the south-east point above the bommie field, which is the prime snorkeling spot.
Gili Rengit vs Gili Layar: Rengit has deeper bommies (5-10m vs 2-5m) and better coral coverage; Layar has shallower easier turtle viewing for beginners. Rengit vs Gili Nanggu: Nanggu has crystal lagoon and busier crowds; Rengit has more interesting topography and fewer people. Rengit vs Gili Asahan: Asahan offers diving for advanced; Rengit is the snorkel sweet spot of Sekotong.
