Gili Kondo is the snorkeling-best of the East Lombok Gili cluster (Kondo, Bidara, Petagan), with healthy hard coral in 1-7m water, 12-15m visibility, and almost no day-trippers. Reached only by chartered boat from Labuhan Pandan harbor (45 min crossing) at 400-600k IDR private charter or 100-150k IDR shared. The east-Lombok cluster is 2.5 hours drive from Mataram and effectively undiscovered by Western tourists.
# Snorkeling Gili Kondo: East Lombok's Forgotten Reef
Gili Kondo is the principal snorkeling island of east Lombok's three-Gili cluster (Kondo, Bidara Petagan, Petagan), located off the north-east coast near Labuhan Pandan. Unlike the heavily-trafficked Gili Trio in the north-west or the increasingly popular Sekotong Gilis in the south-west, the east Lombok cluster sees a handful of visitors per day and on weekdays often nobody at all.
Three reasons:
1. Distance: 2.5 hours drive from Mataram, vs 90 minutes to Sekotong or 75 minutes to Bangsal for Gili Trio
2. Limited boat infrastructure: Labuhan Pandan harbor has fewer boatmen and no English signage
3. Zero accommodation on island: Kondo has no homestay or restaurant — pure day-trip
The result is a snorkeling experience that resembles what the Gili Trio probably felt in the 1990s: empty water, healthy coral, and a sense of finding something undiscovered.
Despite the lack of attention, the reef is healthy:
The reef is not as dense with bommies as Gili Rengit (Sekotong) but the overall coral cover is comparable to Gili Trawangan's south-east before the bleaching events.
Visibility runs 12-15 meters in dry season, dropping to 6-8 meters during wet season squalls. Water temperature 27-29 degrees year-round. The east-side fringing reef sits in 1-7 meters of water — accessible to all swimmer levels.
The channel between Kondo and the mainland has stronger current than the Sekotong channels, and the open-water crossing from Labuhan Pandan is choppier than the protected Sekotong route. Confirm sea state with the boatman before paying — it is the single most important safety check.
From Mataram or Senggigi, drive 2.5 hours east via Pringgabaya to Labuhan Pandan. The drive itself is part of the day:
Boats are wooden outriggers seating 6-8 people. The crossing to Kondo is 45 minutes across moderately open water. Returning is faster (with prevailing wind).
Pricing:
The east Lombok 3-Gili circuit is structured similarly to Sekotong but stretched over more boat time:
Total day: 11+ hours. Long but rewarding.
Where Kondo fits:
Kondo is for travelers who specifically want to escape other tourists. The reef quality is competitive with Sekotong but the access friction is significantly higher.
Best season: June-September (15m visibility, settled water)
Acceptable: April-May, October-November (12-13m, occasional swell)
Avoid: December-March (wet season, choppy crossing, visibility 6-8m, frequent cancellations)
Within the day, mid-morning to early afternoon. Boats do not run reliably after 4pm.
Kondo trips have specific challenges:
Language: Boatmen at Labuhan Pandan speak limited English. Bring a translator app or written instructions in Bahasa.
Lunch: No warung on Kondo or on most of the cluster. Buy a packed lunch in Pringgabaya market or have your hotel pack one.
Cash: No ATM at the harbor. Bring 1.5M IDR cash for boat, lunch, tips, fuel.
Bathroom: No facilities on Kondo. Plan accordingly before boarding.
Signal: No mobile signal on Kondo. Tell someone your itinerary before departing.
Public transport to Labuhan Pandan is unreliable for tourists. Hire a Mataram driver:
For solo travelers, a scooter rental works (75k IDR/day) but the 2.5-hour ride each way is exhausting. Driver is recommended.
Many travelers turn the Kondo trip into a 2-day east Lombok loop:
Day 1:
Day 2:
This works much better than the same-day return from Mataram.
Standard snorkel kit plus the east-Lombok specific items:
Kondo trips have higher logistical risk than Sekotong or Gili Trio. Specifically:
For travelers comfortable with self-managed adventure, this is well within reasonable risk. For travelers wanting full safety infrastructure, stick to Gili Trio or Sekotong.
Gili Kondo is for the snorkeler who has done the popular spots and wants to find something quieter. The reef is healthy, the visibility is decent, and you may not see another tourist all day. The cost is the long drive, the language friction, and the logistical work. For the right traveler, that cost is exactly what makes it worthwhile.
Drive 2.5 hours east from Mataram via Pringgabaya to Labuhan Pandan harbor on the north-east coast (Google Maps: 'Pelabuhan Labuhan Pandan'). Negotiate with boatmen for the East Lombok 3-Gili circuit (Kondo, Bidara Petagan, Petagan). Boat ride to Kondo is 45 minutes across open water. Sea conditions can be choppier than Sekotong — confirm conditions before paying.
Gili Kondo vs Sekotong Gilis: Kondo has fewer tourists (often empty) but a longer drive and rougher crossing; Sekotong is more accessible but busier. Kondo vs Gili Trio: Kondo has comparable coral quality without ANY beach bars, party scene, or accommodation; Gili Trio has full infrastructure. Kondo vs Pink Beach: Pink Beach is south coast, more accessible by car; Kondo is east coast remote and requires boat charter.
