Gili Bidara is a small uninhabited Sekotong gili reached only by chartered or shared boat from Tawun or Sekotong harbor. Snorkeling sits in 1-6m water with bommies starting 3m from the beach, 12-15m visibility on calm days, and a steady population of parrotfish, butterflyfish, and small reef sharks at the drop. Day-trip charter from Sekotong runs 350-700k IDR per boat covering Bidara plus Layar and Rengit.
# Snorkeling Gili Bidara: The Sekotong Day-Trip Reef
Gili Bidara is one of the smaller uninhabited Sekotong Gilis off Lombok's south-west coast, typically visited as the first stop on a 3-Gili snorkeling charter (Bidara, Layar, Rengit). It is not on most tourist itineraries, which is exactly its appeal — on a midweek morning you may have the entire reef to yourself.
The snorkeling at Gili Bidara is shallow-water reef snorkeling, not deep drop-off snorkeling. Most of the marine life sits in 1-6 meters of water. Expect to see:
You will not see manta rays, large pelagic, or turtles in any number — Bidara is a small-reef-fish destination. For turtles, continue to Gili Layar.
Visibility runs 12-15 meters on calm dry-season mornings, dropping to 6-8 meters when the SE trade wind picks up after lunch. Water temperature stays a steady 27-29 degrees Celsius year-round, no wetsuit needed.
The reef sits inside a calm lagoon protected by the larger Sekotong landmass. Currents are mild — usually under half a knot — but pick up between Bidara and Layar where a tidal channel runs east-west. Stay on the lee (west) side of the island when current is running.
There is no scheduled boat to Bidara. Access is by chartered or shared boat from Tawun harbor on the Sekotong peninsula. The drive from Mataram is 90 minutes south through Sekotong town, ending at a small fishing harbor with cooperative boatmen.
Boat rates are negotiable but the standard 3-Gili day-trip circuit runs:
Boats depart 9-10am and return 3-4pm before afternoon wind. Negotiate the price for the package, not per-island, and confirm fuel and lunch responsibilities before leaving.
Charter boats spend 45-60 minutes at each Gili. At Bidara, the standard sequence is:
1. Anchor on the south-east point where the reef is densest
2. Snorkel from the boat — the reef starts 3 meters from where you slip in
3. Drift south along the inner reef flat with mild current
4. Cross to the beach for a 10-minute walk and water break
5. Re-board for the next island
The southern point has the best coral diversity. The northern half of the island is sandier with fewer fish.
Each Sekotong Gili has a snorkeling personality:
Bidara's edge is the combination of solitude and decent coral. If you want a postcard photo without 30 other tourists in the frame, this is your stop.
The Sekotong Gilis are calm year-round but visibility and crowds shift seasonally:
Avoid full-moon week if possible — strong tidal currents through the channels make visibility murky.
Bidara has no facilities. No lifeguard, no first aid, no warung. The boatman is your only safety net. Before snorkeling:
The nearest clinic is 90 minutes away in Mataram. Take it conservatively.
Most travelers do Bidara as part of a 3-Gili or 4-Gili circuit. Suggested itineraries:
Half-day (4 hours): Bidara, Layar, Rengit. Quick lunch on Layar beach.
Full day (7 hours): Bidara, Layar, Rengit, Pink Beach. Lunch at the boat or at Pink Beach warung.
Two-day Sekotong: Add an overnight at Gili Asahan eco-lodge to slow the pace.
For a one-day Lombok visit from Bali, this circuit fits a 6am ferry and returns by sundown.
Most travelers walk up at Tawun harbor and negotiate. There is no online booking system for the cooperative boatmen. To pre-arrange:
Walk-up is the cheapest. Booked tours are the easiest. Either works.
Gili Bidara is not the best snorkeling in Lombok by absolute reef quality — the Gili Trio and Gili Nanggu both have better coral. But it offers something they cannot: solitude. On a Tuesday morning in May, you can snorkel for an hour without seeing another tourist. That is increasingly rare in Lombok, and worth the boat ride.
From Mataram or Senggigi, drive 90 minutes south to Tawun harbor in Sekotong (Google Maps: 'Tawun Beach'). At the harbor, negotiate with boatman cooperatives for the 3-Gili circuit (Bidara, Layar, Rengit). Boats are open wooden outriggers seating 6-8 people. Boat ride from Tawun to Bidara takes 20-25 minutes across calm bay water. No public transport — rent a scooter (75k/day) or hire a car with driver (450k/day) from Mataram.
Gili Bidara vs Gili Nanggu: Bidara has fewer day-trippers (often you have it alone) but Nanggu has better infrastructure and clearer reef. Bidara vs Gili Layar: Layar has stronger turtle population; Bidara has better small reef-fish density and easier entry. Bidara vs Gili Trawangan: Trawangan is bigger, busier, has dive shops; Bidara is the silent uninhabited choice for travelers wanting empty water.
