Gili Asahan is the largest of the inhabited Sekotong Gilis with a 1km fringing reef accessible directly from the beach, no boat required once you arrive. Visibility runs 14-18m in dry season — the best in Sekotong — and the south-west wall drops to 25m for advanced snorkelers and divers. Day-trip access by shuttle boat from Pelangan harbor (15 min, 75k IDR return) or stay overnight at Gili Asahan Eco Lodge for unlimited reef access.
# Snorkeling Gili Asahan: The Big Reef of Sekotong
Gili Asahan is the largest of the inhabited Sekotong Gilis and the only one in the cluster where you can walk into excellent snorkeling directly from the beach. While Bidara, Layar, and Rengit are boat-charter day-trip destinations, Asahan supports overnight stays — meaning you can snorkel at sunrise alone, and again at sunset.
Gili Asahan's fringing reef wraps the entire island, roughly 3km of coastline. The east side (where the jetty is) has a narrower reef flat with fish nursery zones. The south-west corner has the best mature coral and the dramatic outer wall.
What you see:
For sheer reef variety, Asahan beats every other Sekotong Gili.
Visibility at Asahan is the best in Sekotong:
Water temperature 27-29 degrees C year-round. The wall on the south-west side has visibility up to 20m on the calmest days.
From Mataram or Senggigi, drive 100 minutes south through Sekotong town to Pelangan harbor (Pelabuhan Pelangan). The harbor is small with a single concrete jetty.
Boat options:
The shuttle boat is the standard option for day-trippers. Last shuttle back is typically 5pm — confirm at the jetty.
Asahan supports several distinct snorkel routes. Walk from the jetty to your chosen entry:
Route 1: East fringing reef (5 min from jetty)
Easiest, shallowest, family-friendly. Reef in 1-3m water with parrotfish and butterflyfish. Suitable for first-timers and kids.
Route 2: South bay coral garden (15 min walk)
Best hard coral coverage. Turtles in 5-7m water in the seagrass patches. Moderate skill — some current on outgoing tide.
Route 3: South-west wall (20-25 min walk)
The highlight. Wall drops from 5m to 25m. Reef sharks, fusiliers, occasional eagle rays. Strong swimmers only — current can be moderate.
Route 4: North channel (10 min walk)
The channel between Asahan and Goleng has fast-moving fish life — trevally, jacks, barracuda. Strong current — only attempt at slack tide.
For a full day, do Route 1 in the morning, lunch at the eco-lodge, then Route 3 in the afternoon when sun illuminates the wall.
You have two main visit modes:
Day trip (4-6 hours): Take the morning shuttle, snorkel two routes, lunch at the eco-lodge, return on the 3pm shuttle. Total cost 250-400k IDR including transport, lunch, and reef fee.
Overnight (24-48 hours): Stay at Gili Asahan Eco Lodge (600k-1.8M IDR per night depending on bungalow). Sunrise snorkel alone, three reef sessions per day, sunset on the west beach, all-included meals option. Total cost 1.5-3M IDR per night per person all-in.
For serious snorkelers, the overnight transforms the experience. The shuttle-boat day trippers leave by 4pm and you have the entire reef to yourself.
The only accommodation on the island. Run as a no-plastic eco-resort:
Book 2-4 weeks ahead in dry season; sometimes available walk-in in shoulder months.
Asahan is also a dive destination. The wall on the south-west side has dive operators from Sekotong town running boats. Costs:
For non-divers, the snorkel-friendly portion of the same wall is accessible from shore in 5-10m water.
Best months for visibility: June-September (16-18m)
Best months for solitude: April-May, October-November
Avoid: January-February (wet season swell, lower visibility, occasional storm cancellations)
Within the day:
Asahan is generally safe but has specific current zones:
Tide tables are available at the eco-lodge front desk. Check before each snorkel.
For day trippers:
For overnight:
Asahan's eco-lodge runs a strict no-plastic policy. Refill water at lodge dispenser (free for guests). Pack out everything you bring in. Standard reef etiquette:
The eco-lodge runs occasional reef cleanups; ask if you can join.
For day trips: Walk up at Pelangan harbor between 8am and 3pm. No booking needed.
For overnight: Book Gili Asahan Eco Lodge directly via their website or WhatsApp. Booking.com sometimes lists rooms but often shows sold out when direct booking is available.
For packages: Sekotong Adventure and other operators offer combined transfer + snorkeling + lunch + return packages at 600k-900k IDR per person.
Gili Asahan is the slow-snorkeling Sekotong choice. Where the 3-Gili day trip rushes you through Bidara, Layar, and Rengit in 5 hours, Asahan rewards a full day or overnight on a single island. For travelers who want to actually relax with a reef rather than tick through three of them, this is the move.
From Mataram or Senggigi, drive 100 minutes south through Sekotong to Pelangan harbor. Take the shuttle boat (every 1-2 hours, 15 min crossing, 75k IDR return) or charter a private boat 250k IDR. Arrive on the east jetty of Gili Asahan and walk 5 minutes to any beach access. The eco-lodge is on the east side; the best snorkeling is on the south-west corner — a 20-minute walk along the beach.
Gili Asahan vs Gili Rengit: Asahan has more reef coverage and on-island stay options; Rengit has the dramatic bommies in less area. Asahan vs Gili Gede: Gede is the larger inhabited Sekotong island with more accommodation; Asahan has clearer water and better fringing reef. Asahan vs day-trip 3-Gili: 3-Gili is more variety in less time; Asahan rewards slow exploration over a full day or overnight.
