South Lombok is the advanced-and-intermediate divers' alternative to the busier Gili Trio in the north. The region covers three distinct dive areas: Belongas Bay (hammerhead sharks at The Magnet — advanced only), Sekotong Bay and the 'Secret Gilis' archipelago (gentle reef diving for all levels), and Ekas Bay (an emerging dive area on the south-east coast). A complete south Lombok dive itinerary takes 4–5 days and combines all three areas. Operators are based in Kuta, Mataram, and Sekotong village. Day-trip costs range 1.0–2.0M IDR depending on site and distance.
# Diving South Lombok: The Advanced Alternative to the Gili Trio
South Lombok diving is what serious divers come to Lombok for. While the Gili Trio in the north dominates the headlines and the dive shop count, south Lombok offers genuinely advanced shark diving, intact coral reef in protected bays, and a tenth of the crowd density. The region is split into three distinct dive areas, each with its own character and operator network.
This guide is an overview. For deep dives into specific destinations, see the dedicated guides for Belongas Bay, Sekotong, Gili Nanggu, Gili Gede, and Ekas Bay.
Belongas Bay (south-west coast): Advanced-only big-water diving. Scalloped hammerhead sharks, dramatic underwater pinnacles, strong currents. The signature destination is The Magnet pinnacle. AOW certification and 30+ logged dives required.
Sekotong Bay and the 'Secret Gilis' (south-west coast, north of Belongas): Gentle reef diving for all levels. The Secret Gilis archipelago — Gili Nanggu, Gili Sudak, Gili Kedis, Gili Layar, Gili Gede, Gili Asahan — collectively offers some of Lombok's most intact coral and quietest dive sites. Beginner to intermediate.
Ekas Bay (south-east coast): Emerging dive area, primarily known for surfing but with a growing reef diving scene. Less developed operator infrastructure but worth exploring for serious divers wanting to leave the beaten track. Beginner to intermediate.
The complete south Lombok dive trip combines all three.
Three reasons divers choose south Lombok over the Gili Trio:
1. Hammerheads: Belongas is the only realistic destination in Lombok where you can dive with scalloped hammerhead schools. Outside of Komodo and the Banda Sea, there's nowhere else in eastern Indonesia with this kind of accessibility.
2. Intact coral: Sekotong's Secret Gilis sit outside the main tourist pressure of the Gili Trio. Hard coral cover is significantly higher and bleaching damage less visible. For coral-focused divers, Sekotong wins.
3. Quiet boats: At a typical Sekotong site you might see 1–2 dive boats. At Meno Wall in peak season you'll see 6–10. The actual underwater experience is dramatically less crowded.
The trade-off is logistics. South Lombok requires longer transfers from the international airport, more rural accommodation, and operators that are smaller and less polished than the Gili Trio's PADI 5-star outfits.
The major south Lombok operators:
Dive Zone Lombok (PADI 5-star, Kuta): The most experienced operator on Belongas. Run weekly Belongas trips throughout dry season, multi-day liveaboards July–October, and serve the south coast (including Ekas Bay) for fun diving. Mid-to-premium pricing, justified by track record and DAN coverage.
Dive Sekotong (PADI, Sekotong village): The default for Secret Gilis diving. Small operation, group sizes of 4–6, locally crewed. Strong knowledge of southern Sekotong sites including Gili Layar and Gili Gede.
Sekotong Dive Centre (SSI, Gili Asahan): Often based out of Gili Asahan eco-resort. Run combined dive-and-stay packages on the southern Secret Gilis.
Lombok Dive Centre (PADI, Mataram): Smaller Mataram-based operator. Runs Belongas trips on demand and as part of multi-site South Lombok expeditions.
A handful of Senggigi-based and Gili-based operators run rare south Lombok day trips on demand — these are typically more expensive due to the longer transfer.

The 5-day plan:
Day 1 (arrival): Land at LOP airport, transfer to Kuta accommodation, evening surf or rest.
Day 2: Belongas Bay first attempt (The Magnet + The Cathedral). 5:30am pickup, 5pm return.
Day 3: Sekotong day-trip (Gili Nanggu + Gili Sudak). Easy reef and turtles to recover from the previous day's intensity.
Day 4: Sekotong second day (Gili Layar Drift + Gili Gede Wall). More variety; intermediate sites with current.
Day 5: Belongas Bay second attempt (if season is right) OR Ekas Bay reef diving from Kuta. The second Belongas attempt maximises hammerhead chances.
Total fun dive cost: roughly 5.5–7.5M IDR. Total accommodation (Kuta mid-range): 4–6M IDR. All-in for 5 nights: around 12–15M IDR per diver, excluding flights.
June–October: Peak across all three south Lombok areas. Visibility 20–30m at Sekotong, 20–25m at Belongas (when conditions hold). Hammerheads at Belongas active July–October.
September: The single best month. Calm seas, peak hammerhead activity, post-August crowds gone, water still warm.
April–May & November: Shoulder. Sekotong still good; Belongas trips less reliable due to swell.
December–March: Wet season. Sekotong diving still possible but visibility drops to 10–15m; Belongas largely off-season.
Be honest about the trade-offs:
If your priority is course infrastructure, easy logistics, and a busy social scene around diving, the Gili Trio is the better base. If your priority is genuine advanced diving, intact coral, and quiet boats, south Lombok wins.

South Lombok diving is centred on three bases: Kuta (south coast — base for Belongas, Ekas, and reef sites), Sekotong village (south-west — base for Secret Gilis), and Mataram (90 min north — base for Sekotong day trips). The international airport (LOP) is centrally located, with Kuta 30 min south, Sekotong 60 min south-west, and Belongas 90 min from Kuta. Most divers stay in Kuta for the south coast and Sekotong for the Secret Gilis.
South Lombok diving vs the Gili Trio: south Lombok offers genuine advanced diving (Belongas hammerheads), quieter intact-coral reef diving (Sekotong), and far fewer crowds. The Gili Trio is gentler, has better course infrastructure, and easier logistics. South Lombok vs Komodo: Komodo has more famous sites and bigger pelagic action but costs 3–5x more — south Lombok offers comparable advanced shark diving at Belongas at a fraction of the price. South Lombok vs Bali Crystal Bay: both have mola mola and good dive culture, but south Lombok adds the Belongas hammerhead encounter that Bali simply doesn't have.
