# Diving Gili Trawangan: The Gili Trio's Dive Capital
Gili Trawangan is the dive capital of the Gili Islands and one of Asia's best places to learn diving. With 15+ dive sites within 30 minutes of shore, 8+ reputable dive shops, and excellent training infrastructure, it's where many international divers earn their first PADI certifications.
Three reasons Gili T is the dive hub:
1. Site density: 15+ named dive sites within short boat range
2. Operator competition: 8+ dive shops drive quality and pricing
3. Training infrastructure: Multiple PADI 5-star shops with experienced instructors
The combination makes Gili T accessible for first-time divers and experienced enthusiasts alike.
Blue Marlin Dive Gili Trawangan (PADI 5-star IDC): The most prestigious shop on the island. Strict safety standards, premium equipment, experienced instructors. Best for first-time divers and those seeking quality. Higher prices justified by quality.
Trawangan Dive Center (PADI 5-star): Large operation with reliable service. Strong Junior Open Water program for kids. Mid-tier pricing.
Manta Dive Gili Trawangan (PADI 5-star): Dive resort model with on-site accommodation. Smaller groups, premium experience. Great for combined dive + stay packages.
Big Bubble Dive (PADI): Mid-tier reliable shop. Good for budget-conscious divers wanting decent quality.
Vyna Dive: Smaller operation with personalized service.
Avoid: Shops with 8+ divers per group, no safety briefings, or chronic equipment problems.
Shark Point: 18-30m depth. Reef sharks (white-tip and black-tip), schools of fish, soft coral. Moderate to strong current. Intermediate dive.
Deep Turbo: 22-30m depth. Pelagic fish, occasional sharks, coral wall sections. Advanced dive due to depth.
Halik Reef: 12-20m depth. Diverse coral and reef fish. Beginner-friendly.
Simon's Reef: 15-25m depth. Coral garden with diverse marine life. Intermediate.

Best months: June-October (dry season peak with 25m+ visibility)
Good months: April-May (post-rainy-season with improving conditions)
Acceptable: March, November (shoulder season with variable conditions)
Reduced quality: December-February (rainy season, 10-15m visibility)
Most experienced divers target June-September for the absolute best experience.
8am dives: Clearest water, no boat traffic, freshest coral, most marine activity
11am dives: Good conditions, slightly more crowded
2pm dives: Acceptable but visibility may be reduced from boat sediment
Morning dives are dramatically better. Always book the 8am slot if available.
Reputable Gili T shops maintain:
The Hyperbaric Chamber (decompression treatment) is in Mataram (90 min from Gili T). Reputable shops have evacuation protocols for diving accidents.
A typical 2-day diving program:
Day 1:
Day 2:
Total cost ~3-4 million IDR for 5 dives over 2 days. Excellent value for the dive site variety.
Walk to any of 8+ dive shops on Gili T main strip. Most shops are within 10 minutes of central accommodations. Boat dives depart from each shop's harbor area. From Lombok mainland, take public slow boat from Bangsal (25k IDR) or fast boat from Senggigi/Teluk Nare to Gili T, then walk to dive shop.
Gili T diving vs Gili Air: Gili T has more dive shops and variety; Gili Air has more boutique experiences and quieter vibe. Gili T diving vs Komodo: Komodo has bigger fish (mantas, sharks) but Gili T has better infrastructure and is dramatically cheaper. For Open Water courses, Gili T is one of the best places in Asia.
