Gili Trawangan is one of the world's only fully motor-vehicle-free islands — the 7.5km coastal track is best explored by bicycle. Daily bike rental 50-100k IDR (basic), 100-150k IDR (full-suspension or e-bike). Loop takes 1-2 hours including beach stops. Sandy sections on the eastern coast require pushing the bike. Combine with sunset at the western Sunset Hills viewpoint.
# Cycling Gili Trawangan: The Motor-Free Island Loop
Gili Trawangan is one of the world's most cycle-friendly islands — a small (3km long, 2km wide, 7.5km coastline) island with absolutely no motor vehicles. The only transport options are bicycles, walking, and traditional horse carts (cidomo). For most travellers, a half-day cycle loop is the essential Gili Trawangan activity, mixing beach scenery, snorkel stops, and the iconic sunset viewpoint.
Gili Trawangan lies 6km off Lombok's northwest coast. Layout:
The 7.5km circular track follows the coast at most points, with the inland village area accessed via inner roads.
No motor vehicles means:
The alternative (walking the loop) takes 2-3 hours and limits you to fewer stops. Cycling lets you cover the island in 1-2 hours and add multiple stops.
Trawangan has dozens of rental shops:
Quality varies. Test the bike before riding away:
Don't accept obvious junk — walk to the next shop.
Standard clockwise loop (recommended for sand-section management):
Start at main jetty (south coast east)
Total time: 1 hour cycling, 2-3 hours with photo and snorkel stops.
Two coastal stretches have deep sand that bicycles can't ride through:
Standard practice: dismount and push the bike for these sections. Total walking is 5-10 minutes — minor.
E-bikes can sometimes power through partially, but most riders still push.
Low and high tide affect cycling:
Check tide times if planning a specific itinerary. Generally low-to-mid tide is easier.
The western coast has Sunset Hills — a low hill with the islaand's classic sunset viewpoint. Layout:
Park your bike at the hill base and walk the final 5 minutes to the viewpoint.
The north coast has Turtle Point — best snorkel spot for green and hawksbill turtle sightings:
Combining cycle loop with mid-loop snorkel break adds 1-2 hours.
Trawangan has multiple water-refill stations:
The island has invested in single-use plastic reduction; bottle refills are encouraged.
Trawangan's no-vehicle status doesn't eliminate hazards:
There are no ambulances on Trawangan — first aid is via the small clinic. Treat injuries seriously and get evacuated to Lombok mainland for anything beyond basics.
E-bikes (150-200k IDR/day) are worth considering if:
Regular bikes are fine if you're reasonably fit and pacing yourself.
A typical full Trawangan day:
The loop is the spine of the day's exploration.
Cycling Trawangan is cheap:
Compare to motorised transport on most other islands — cycling is dramatically cheaper and more pleasant.
Gili Trawangan is reached by boat from Bangsal harbour (north Lombok) — public boat 25k IDR (40 min), or speedboat 150k IDR from Teluk Nare (15 min). From Bali, fast boats from Padangbai 350-700k IDR. Once on Gili Trawangan, walk 100m from the main jetty to any of dozens of bike rental shops along the main strip. Bikes are everywhere.
Gili Trawangan vs Gili Air cycling: Trawangan is bigger (7.5km loop) with more variety; Gili Air loop is shorter (5km) and more village-feel. Trawangan vs Gili Meno: Meno is smallest (~3km) and quietest. All three Gilis are no-motor-vehicle, all loop-cyclable in 1-2 hours. Choose Trawangan for the most varied scenery and most rental options.
